Spanning the Centuries - While the first state academies of science were founded in the late eighteenth century in Maryland (1797) and Connecticut (1799), the majority began in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The objectives of these organizations were to improve local and regional scientific communication and research. The primary focus was the annual meeting where scientists gathered for the presentation of research papers. These meetings provided a forum for young researchers (i.e. graduate students) to present their first papers. Today, state academies of science continue to focus much of their attention on promoting science and science education on the state and regional levels. The journals of the state academies of science chronicle this research.
SASA: Helping to improve the visibility of journals and researchers Since the inception of State Academies of Science Abstracts in 1994, AcadSci, Inc. has closely interfaced with the academies of science to increase the accessibility of their journals to researchers. The mission of State Academies of Science Abstracts is to provide a vehicle for the systematic, periodic examination of scholarly research activities of the state academies of science of the United States. In addition to providing complete, comprehensive abstracting/indexing of 40 of the 41 state academy of science journals, the database continues to add the back files for many of the titles.
Academy Journals: Valuable resources for science and technology The journals of the state academies of science are generally peer reviewed and multidisciplinary in nature, with a strong emphasis on life and earth science studies. An impressive number of these publications also demonstrate a high interest in the physical sciences, applied sciences, science education, and human topics. The journals of the state academies of science offer researchers and librarians with inexpensive access to state and regional science research, and consequently serve as valuable resources for science and technology libraries. Researchers without access to state academy of science journals can request copies of papers directly from authors or through inter-library loan. Marshall University's Drinko Library serves as the national depository for state academy of science journals and fills all inter-library loan requests.
